Emergencies with fixed appliances

  • If a wire has become undone at the side, try to bend back the wire using a match, the handle of a teaspoon or the eraser side of a pencil.
  • If the end if the wire has slipped out of the bracket, try to cover up the pointy end using wax.
  • If a bracket is loose, however still attached to the wire and does not irritate the patient it is best to leave it as is.
  • If a bracket is loose and interfering with for instance closing the mouth or is irritating the gum of cheek tissue, try to carefully remove it with tweezers or small pliers. Do not use cutting pliers as ricocheting pieces of wire can cause injury.
In any case, make a repair appointment in the office as soon as possible.
Emergencies with removable appliances

  • If there is a sharp edge or a piece of the braces has broken off, try using a nail file of fine sandpaper to smoothen that area.
  • If the braces is heavily damaged or a piece of wire is poking the patient, do not try to reinsert the braces.
  • Make a repair appointment as soon as possible as longer periods of not waring the removable appliance may lead to relapse.
